Your First BioSpine Visit: Before Any Adjustment

What to bring to the John Street office, what Dr. Jordan examines, when imaging may matter, and why treatment does not automatically begin on day one.

Updated 3 min readBy Dr. Chucky S. Jordan, D.C.

The first appointment at BioSpine is an examination, not an automatic adjustment. Dr. Chucky Jordan starts by learning what changed, checking for findings that affect treatment, and deciding whether the problem belongs in a chiropractic office.

Before you arrive

Plan to arrive about 10 minutes early so you have time to complete new-patient paperwork without feeling rushed. Bring:

  • A valid photo ID
  • Your insurance card, if you’re using insurance
  • Any recent imaging (X-rays, MRIs, or CT scans from the past year)
  • A list of current medications and supplements
  • A list of previous surgeries, major injuries, or chronic diagnoses

Wear comfortable clothes that allow the painful area and nearby joints to move during the exam.

Step 1. The consultation

Dr. Jordan will ask what brought you in, when the problem started, what changes it, and what work or activity it is keeping you from doing. A useful history also covers prior episodes, treatment, injuries, surgery, medical conditions, and medications.

Good diagnoses start with good history-taking. I’ll ask questions like:

  • When did you first notice the pain?
  • Is it sharp, dull, burning, or radiating?
  • Does anything make it better or worse?
  • Have you had this type of pain before?
  • What’s your day-to-day work and activity level?

Step 2. The physical exam

Next comes a hands-on exam. I’ll check your posture, range of motion, and how your spine and joints are moving. I’ll also run targeted orthopedic and neurological tests, simple motions and pressure tests, to help pinpoint exactly what’s going on.

Some examination movements may reproduce the symptom you came in with. Tell Dr. Jordan what you feel so the test can be modified or stopped when necessary.

Step 3. Imaging (only if needed)

Routine imaging is not necessary for every uncomplicated spine complaint. It may be considered when the history and exam raise concern about trauma, neurological changes, another medical cause, or when the result would change treatment.

If you already have a relevant report or image, bring it so Dr. Jordan can decide whether anything else is needed.

Step 4. Your diagnosis and care plan

After the exam, Dr. Jordan will explain:

  • Which findings appear relevant
  • Whether chiropractic treatment is reasonable
  • What the proposed treatment is meant to change
  • How progress will be measured
  • Which findings would trigger imaging, referral, or a different plan

Not every complaint produces a complete diagnosis at the first visit. If BioSpine is not the appropriate setting, Dr. Jordan will explain what kind of medical evaluation should come next.

Step 5. Treatment, when appropriate

Treatment may begin at the first visit when the examination supports it, the expected benefits and risks have been discussed, and you agree to proceed. In other cases, Dr. Jordan may wait for records, imaging, or another clinician’s evaluation.

When treatment includes an adjustment, you may hear a popping sound as gas moves within a joint. The sound is not the goal of treatment and does not mean a bone was “put back in place.” Home guidance depends on the problem and may include movement, activity changes, or exercise.

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health summarizes the evidence, common short-term reactions, and uncommon serious risks in Spinal Manipulation: What You Need to Know.

How long will it take?

Set aside more time for the first visit than for a follow-up because it includes paperwork, history, and examination. Ask the office for current scheduling details when you call.

Will it hurt?

Responses vary. Tell Dr. Jordan about pain, apprehension, prior reactions, or any technique you do not want. Treatment can be modified, postponed, or declined, and consent can be withdrawn at any point.
