If your DOT medical certificate expires soon and you take blood pressure medication, call before choosing an appointment date. A current medication list and recent treatment information can help the Medical Examiner evaluate your situation without an avoidable second trip.
BioSpine performs DOT physicals in Lake City at 214 John Street. Dr. Chucky S. Jordan is an FMCSA-listed certified Medical Examiner. The examination determines medical qualification; ongoing blood pressure treatment belongs with the clinician managing that condition.
Can you pass a DOT physical with high blood pressure?
Having a hypertension diagnosis does not automatically prevent certification. The reading at the examination, treatment history, medication effects, and other medical findings all matter.
FMCSA's hypertension guidance explains that treated hypertension generally calls for at least annual certification. A shorter certificate may be appropriate when closer monitoring is needed. A reading below 140/90 may support a certificate of up to two years in an otherwise qualified driver, but it does not override the need to evaluate the rest of the examination.
For an initial elevation, the guidance describes a one-year period for readings in the 140–159 systolic or 90–99 diastolic range, and a possible one-time three-month period for the 160–179 or 100–109 range while treatment is addressed. These are examiner guidelines, not a promise of a particular result. More severe readings require further evaluation and can prevent certification until controlled.
What should you bring if you take medication?
Use the DOT physical document checklist, and have these details ready:
- Medication names and current doses
- The name of the clinician managing your blood pressure
- Recent office records or a home reading log, if available
- Any information the examiner requested after a previous visit
- Your current certificate and its expiration date, if you have one
A home log can provide context, but the examiner still needs to perform and assess the examination. Be ready to explain medication changes, side effects, or symptoms honestly.
Prepare for a real assessment
Continue prescribed treatment as directed by your clinician. If readings have been running high, arrange follow-up with that clinician before the certification deadline. Do not change doses or borrow medication to influence an exam reading.
When you call BioSpine, ask whether the examiner wants particular records in advance and how to provide them securely. The website appointment form is for scheduling; bring private medical information to the office through the process the team recommends.
Leave time between the examination and your expiration date. If additional information is needed, a last-day appointment leaves little room to obtain it. Our South Carolina DOT medical card renewal guide explains the broader renewal process.
